Construction industry is suffering from low productivity rate in various projects such as excavation. Although this issue is discussed in literature and several approaches are proposed to address it, productivity rate is still low in construction industry compared to other domains like manufacturing. Three core components directly affect the overall productivity in construction sector, i.e. labour productivity, raw material productivity, and machine or equipment productivity. With a focus on construction machinery, three factors influence productivity at excavation sites; i.e. 1) machine-based productivity and its configuration, 2) site layout and environmental conditions, and 3) operators’ behaviour. Operators’ competence and motivation represent two key parameters that affect their behaviour. On one side, gamification has attracted a growing area of interest both in literature and practice, seeking to place a layer of entertainment and pleasure to the top of serious activities (with a focus on improving the applicant’s motivation and behaviour). On the other side, telematics systems are utilized to collect operational data of the machine, and calculate its productivity rate. Telematics data are presented to operators (via a built-in screen available in the cabin of the machine) to provide real-time feedback about machine performance. In addition, these data can support machine owners to perceive operators’ behaviour on a real-time basis. To conclude, telematics systems are providing real-time data which can be a great input into gamification. A guideline is proposed in this dissertation that helps gamification designers to develop more transparent gamification models. This guideline is utilized to introduce a gamification model that gamifies telematics data with a focus on enhancing operators’ behaviour (machine productivity) in loading and transferring activities. The model was implemented at two sites(one recycling and one mining site) and could encourage operators (who were operating wheel-loaders and dump-trucks) to prevent redundant activities like texting, phoning, and even eating while operating the machine. Subsequently, it enhanced overall machine productivity up to 37% during the site observation. To summarize, a gamified platform in which different operators from different organizations can share their achievements, or can get scored and ranked in a leader-board will potentially lead to a more proper operators’ behaviour at work and subsequently can improve overall productivity rate at construction sites

One of the major causes of traffic accidents is driver’s drowsiness. For this reason, detecting whether the driver's eyes are open or closed is one of the critical factors in reducing road deaths. One way to detect whether your eyes are open or closed is to use EEG signals. EEG signals are obtained from the recording of electrical activity in the human brain. The present study uses a neural network that is applied to the driver's EEG signals to detect whether the eye is open or closed. The data of the EEG signals used in this paper consist of 14 features that are based on a statistical population of 600 people. Various neural network algorithms have been implemented for clustering these data into two classes of open or closed eyes, which are described in this paper. Perceptron neural network and radial base neural network (RBF) are two types of networks used in this paper. Also, in order to improve the execution speed and reduce the occupied space of the microcontroller, the genetic algorithm method has been used to optimize the fitting function of Fisher’s discriminant rate, in which the optimized function provides better results in the less occupied time and space. One of the major causes of traffic accidents is driver’s drowsiness. Cloud based BIM solution for tender estimation regarding mechanical electrical and plumbing (MEP) trades

    No full text
Currently, Microsoft Excel is used in many leading construction companies to prepare tenders regarding Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) trades. Normally, 2D drawings with reference to MEP parts are read and the quantities of such articles are taken off manually. The reached quantities are imported into Excel sheets and following, the unit cost per each article is imported as well. Subsequently, the tender regarding MEP equipment is prepared. Obviously, this method is not accurate and transparent. Moreover, when a drawing is updated, the complete process should be repeated. Furthermore, there is a countless number of articles in MEP industry and without an integrated platform, it’s not possible to manage them. Storing such amount of information (local storage) will lead to many operational problems for the used software solutions. So it’s desirable to use cloud based BIM firstly to improve the transparency and accuracy within tender estimation phase and secondly to increase the operation speed of the related software solutions. For this study, a pilot project in cooperation with Max Boegl group, RIB and StabiPlan was implemented. StabiPlan provides a platform to create a 3D model with the exact properties information for most MEP articles. Then the created 3D-model is imported into RIB iTWO to prepare the tender. Moreover, a server is established to store properties information regarding each article. Following iTWO MM (material management) and iTWO TX (tender exchange) modules are going to come into account. They will create an e-platform to transfer sub-tenders between main contractor, subcontractors and wholesalers.Non UBCUnreviewedFacultyOthe

Study of the Effects of Slip Distance and Surface Roughness on Wear Rate

    No full text
Abstract The phenomenon of wear is one of the significant and reviewable topics in industrial parts and equipments. Furthermore, with the increasing expansion of rail transportation industry in the world, a noticeable part of researches in this area have been allocated to the study of wear between wheel and rail. The contact surfaces of wheel and rail in railway lines in particular intra-city lines (subway) are subject to intensive wear due to the creation of rolling motion. In current work, an experimental investigation was performed based on dry pin-on-disk test to find effects of slip distance, hardness and surface roughness on wear rate and plastic deformation in rail-wheel interfacial contact. Results indicated that the wear rate decreases by decrease in slip distance. Furthermore, it was observed that both wear rate and plastic deformation increases by increase in surface roughness of the wheel

Antibiotic pollution in water is a growing threat to public health and the environment, leading to the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. While photocatalysis has emerged as a promising technology for removing antibiotics from water, its limited efficiency in the visible light range remains a challenge. In this study, we present a novel method for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline, the second most commonly used antibiotic worldwide, using α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanocomposites synthesized via rapid sonochemical and wet impregnation methods. The nanocomposites were characterised and tested using a range of techniques, including BET, TEM, FTIR, XRD, FESEM, EDS, and UV-Vis. The RSM-CCD method was also used to optimize the degradation process by varying four key variables (initial concentration, photocatalyst quantity, irradiation time, and pH). The resulting optimized conditions achieved a remarkable degradation rate of 97.5%. We also investigated the mechanism of photodegradation and the reusability of the photocatalysts, as well as the effect of light source operating conditions. Overall, the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in degrading tetracycline in water and suggest that it may be a promising, eco-friendly technology for the treatment of water contaminated with antibiotics
